Ann Haessel Artist Statement: The primary focus of my work for many years has been the tactile quality and textures that I can create with fibers, threads and textiles. However, recently I shifted away from fabric and thread to explore new modes of expression using paint, paper, metal, wood and plastic while still retaining references and associations to a textile surface. These materials are combined in interesting ways. Some are collage, some are pieced, and some are glued. After the initial idea starts to germinate, I paint, silk-screen, machine stitch and apply heat to distress the materials. I superimpose multiple layers across the surface to create a sense of intrigue that a viewer will hopefully find compelling and therefore study the work and seek out the minute details and embellishments. The layering process also causes sublety in color and texture that suggests something is hidden from the viewer, that secrets may be revealed upon closer examination. My work also emphasizes many unique and original techniques. The process is very time consuming and the work ethic embedded in each piece is an important aspect of the work.
