Kathleen Karlsen Artist Statement: I am inspired to paint images that are just a step beyond the physical. I am seeking to create art that is connected to the world around us and yet transcends our world. I want everything in my art to be vibrantly alive.I believe that the power of art is more than the depiction of objective, physical reality. The impact of art is really the energy or feelings embodied in a particular visual image.
Whether I'm painting abstracts or florals or landscapes, my central focus is on conveying a sense of vibrancy and joy through the symbolic language of art. In this way, art can be a source of comfort and healing that enhances the entire process of living.
My work emphasizes texture as well as color. I use a combination of brushes and palette knives with thick, undiluted paint and impasto mediums to build sculptured surfaces and three-dimensional effects in many of my pieces. Florals, landscapes and abstracts lend themselves well to these techniques.
I have always been fascinated with the impact of the arts on human wellness. As a result, I have studied the psychological and emotional aspects of art extensively. I love learning about the symbolic aspects of visual images and I am impressed by research demonstrating that images of nature reduce stress, speed hospital recovery times, and relieve depression. I like the idea that art has practical as well as esthetic value!
