Brian Crawford Young Online Art Listing

Brian Crawford Young lives in Scotland and is a member of the Aberdeen Artists' Society. From Glasgow originally, he now lives and works in Forres, in the North of Scotland. He has also been a documentary film editor and professional photographer. Brian has a keen interest in other creative processes, such as improvised music and modern dance, and tries to compare the methodologies of these arts to painting . His current paintings abstract the forms and textures of the hills of the North of Scotland, and transforms them into landscapes of the mind. Abstract is used here in the sense of taking something out of, or removing from. The underlying reality is always present in some way, albeit altered in colour, but room is left for interpretation. In this way the viewer's mind is more free to wander and make its own connections.

'In my paintings I like to explore the delights of the tension between abstraction and reality, and the push and pull of the eye being simultaneously invited into, and repelled by, the surface of the canvas. I do this by exaggerating and juxtaposing the natural colours of the landscape, and by improvising and experimenting when I am at the canvas, rather than trying to do it all at the planning stage. Perhaps most of all I like to constantly seek greater colour intensity.'
