Cathy Haight has been exploring the medium of batik for almost 35 years and began working in plein air oils about 10 years ago. In 1980 she sailed across the Pacific to study the ancient art of batik (using wax and dyes on fabric) in Indonesia with internationally acclaimed batik artist Bambang Otoro. From her home in New Mexico, she creates large landscapes with depth and values not often achieved in batik. In her oil paintings, Haight stresses a sense of place, from the badlands and mountains of the Southwest to the hidden corners of Mexico and Canada.
