Laura Dietrick- Artist’s Statement: ' My life has taken me to places with various varieties of light in angle and intensity. Regional country and village settings in the diverse places of Italy, the vineyard filled hillsides near my home in Germany, and now, near my Virginia home, the still quiet marshes behind the Atlantic.

Oils or pastels?...for me a pleasant choice. Each give the chance to capture the light, and the choice affords a variety in application. For my eye, the results feel similar.

Plein air teaches me to blend with the weather, land, light, shadows, forms, movement, and stillness. In the studio, with weathered sketches, sometimes with unfinished pieces interrupted by a rainstorm, my imagination works harder to remember and personify the trees and light.
