People are fascinating subjects to paint. Although I do other works nothing excites as much as trying to portray an individual. When we meet someone, that person's personality and character are vivid impressions of the individual. A "dead on" likeness is critical but I want my perception of the person to be evident as well. I want people close to the subject to immediately recognize the individual. Much of that recognition is caught in the pose, a familiar gesture, the tilt of the head, or a twinkle in the eye. I try hard to present my subject so he or she is satisfied with the image I have painted. If they aren't happy with the portrait then I haven't fulfilled my responsibility as a portrait artist. They are paying for a fine oil portrait and I want my subject pleased with it.
