In searching for a way to honor the memory of my female ancestors, it occurred to me how much fabric and sewing had tied us together. Piles of fabric and tissue dress patterns always meant anticipation, excitement... possibilities, but most of all the comfort of being loved and cared for. I began this series of paintings looking at fabric and tissue dress patterns as having to do with women's work and creativity, but the images are evolving beyond still life. In a painting the fabric and tissue can do magical things, it can leap in the air, confront another piece of fabric, become a mountain, a jungle, a rose, or a bird. It has become the means to create stories about life. I'm working with very strong contrasts in color as a way to express strong contrasts of emotions; love/hate, anticipation/fear, joy/sorrow. Color can be a metaphor for life. When I'm feeling green how do I react to someone who's feeling fuchsia. In a painting the way a color effects the one next to it fascinates to me. While the meaning in the paintings is important, the technical aspects of my work as an artist has equal value. Composition, balance, contrast, and color are all extremely important to me. I want to look at beauty, lushness and complications in my images.
