Mary Kilbreath Online Art Listing
Mary Kilbreath works in oils in the manner of the Old Masters, using thin glazes in dozens of layers to achieve a beautiful depth and luminosity. With contempory subjects Mary explores age-old themes and invites the viewer to contemplate issues which affect us daily. Mary works in her studio with real life set ups, in the field, En Plein Air, and from photographs in a style coined by her mentor as 'Photo-Impressionism'. Different from photo realism where the exact outcome is predicted and known, 'photo impressionism' begins with the aid of a camera, but explores the material in a personal way and interpretation. Elements change, are moved and improved as the process develops. The result is a painterly approach imbued with the spirit of the subjects. Mary was the recent winner of The Artists' Magazine 23rd Annual Competition, Still Life/Student, 2006, with her work 'Big Red Shooter.'
