Frances Stilwell's Artist Statement: I paint for expression. If someone else gets it that's wonderful. When painting I FEEL as if wordless poetry is passing through me. After the painting is done the content is very important to me but I usually don't know what it is ahead-of-time. I know what the subject is, of course, but not the content. If the content materializes it may arrive in the way that a hat gets sucked up from a gentleman walking too close to a passing train. I choose subjects from nature because I paint what I love. I work from life rather than from photographs because I get a better feel for the subject from the real thing. I also like to be out-of-doors. I choose a composition that has revealed itself to me, and me alone. It has presented itself to me as if it were a secret shared. I'm aware of no one else having seen it, at least not in the same way -- and I want express the marvel.
