Bernard Victor's artist statement: I have been painting for 6 years since I retired. I painted at school and passed my school certificate with an excellent but was not able to go to art college, though I did win a youth painting competition at the Slade. After abortive starts in watercolor and pastels, my tutors advised me to change to oils or acrylics. After doing this I felt that I was making more progress and have exhibited at BAS and the Park Gallery in Southwark. Now I work mainly in acrylics for still life and oils for marine paintings. I also belong to a life drawing and painting club, who meet weekly to paint from the model.
My still life paintings are of familiar household objects painted in a flat colorful manner in free form compositions. My marine paintings are mainly of racing sailing dinghies, trying to capture the excitement of this sport. This is a subject that I want to develop to a more abstract style away from the representational as it is at present.
